International Workshop on
Camelid Genetics

Background

The FIRST International Workshop on Camelid Genetics was held in Scottsdale, Arizona February 22nd-24th. Seventeen outstanding scientists and veterinarians from around the world gathered to present the state of the alpaca genome project, camelid genetic research, traits, diseases, and research tools. Total participation at the meeting was about 40 people including other invited scientists and veterinarians, a journalist, Morris Animal Foundation and the Boards of Directors of Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI) and Alpaca Research Foundation (ARF). The meeting was co-sponsored by ARI and ARF and funded by ARI.

The workshop provided an opportunity for discussion of priority research issues such as the development of genomics tools and sharing of samples, genetic markers and other resources. The sequencing of the alpaca genome, the first camelid to be sequenced, at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and compilation of the data in the laboratory of esteemed geneticist Dr. Stephen J. O'Brien, chief of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity and head of the Genetics Section at the National Cancer Institute by Staff Scientist Dr. Warren Johnson and his group will enable the research of many other scientists around the world. Research that will ultimately lead to breeding healthier, more productive and higher quality camelids and impact the lives of millions of people worldwide who depend on camelids for their livelihood.
